I have celebrated the Fourth of July all over the country, and Middletown puts on one of the best celebrations I have ever attended. There is always so much to do, see, and be part of. Somehow the day keeps getting bigger without losing the small-town feeling that makes it special.

That is the part I love. You can spend the morning around the park, see friends and neighbors along Main Street, stop into a local business, watch the parade, listen to live music, and finish under the fireworks. It all happens close to home.

A full day that belongs to the whole town

The official celebration starts in the park in the morning with vendors, games, music, and family activities. Middletown also hosts the region’s only July 4 parade, according to the Winchester-Frederick County visitors guide. By the time the parade begins, Main Street is lined with people waiting for the next float, classic car, horse, band, or familiar face to come around the corner.

The parade is big enough to feel like an event, but close enough that you recognize people in it. Kids wave from the curb. Friends call out to each other across the street. Everyone becomes part of the day, even if they only planned to stand in the shade and watch.

Local businesses make the day their own

One reason the celebration keeps growing is that the town does not leave everything to one stage or one field. Local businesses join in and add something of their own.

Last year, Vault & Cellar joined the day with a flight and other specials. This year, Wayside hosted a dance. The Middletown Farmers Market brought out a water bounce house and bubbles, which is exactly the kind of simple, joyful thing that turns a hot July afternoon into a memory for the kids.

Those details matter. They spread the celebration through town and give people more reasons to walk around, stay longer, and see what the community has to offer.

Familiar faces and a few famous ones

Italian Touch hosted a meet-and-greet with former Washington Redskins and Commanders players. That mix of local and larger-than-life fits Middletown surprisingly well. You can meet sports figures and special guests, then walk outside and immediately run into someone you know.

Music until the sky takes over

Eclectic Company was an awesome band for the evening. Live music changes the feeling of the park. People settle in, food trucks stay busy, and the whole crowd starts watching the sky while the last songs carry across the field.

Then the fireworks begin, and for a little while everyone is looking in the same direction. That is a hard moment to beat. It is a full hometown celebration with sports figures, special guests, a parade, live music, fireworks, and the people who make Middletown feel like Middletown.
